American Kart Racing Association officials are pleased to announce the 2017 AKRA / Vega USA American Sprint Cup Series “Southern Tour” schedule of events and Grand National Championship, which will bring the growing 4-cycle and 2-cycle karting series to four awesome Southeast sprint tracks this April through October!
The AKRA Southern Tour will open April 21-23 at the famed Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC, the site of the first-ever American Sprint Cup event in March 2016. Competitors will do battle on the technical 0.7-mile CMP course, located just 30 minutes south of AKRA headquarters in Monroe, NC.
Two months later on June 23-25 Round 2 will commence at the beautiful new Bushnell Motorsports Park in Bushnell, FL. BMP enters its second full season of operation in 2017, and we’re looking forward to building on a great relationship that began this past season when the Southern Tour closed at the 17-turn, two-thirds-mile road course.
Officials have listened to requests from many of our racers and added a mid-summer round for the Southern Tour and a new track for our racers to enjoy. Round 3 will have the tour at Monticello Karting in Monticello, FL, on July 21-23. Located about 30 miles east of Tallahassee in the panhandle of Florida, Monticello offers an outstanding road course over one mile in length and 19 corners, if the full course is utilized. Officials will announce which course we will utilize at Monticello and other exciting news about this event soon.
The fourth and final round of the Southern Tour will have the series back at one of the most historic kart tracks in the country in Lamar County Speedway in Barnesville, GA. The Barnesville event will be a two-day event on Sept. 9-10 to decide the 2017 Southern Tour points championships.
Once the Southern Tour is wrapped up, racers will have nearly seven weeks to prepare for the second annual AKRA Sprint Grand National Championship, October 27-29 at the popular 103rd Street Sports Complex in Jacksonville, FL.
All Southern Tour events and the Jacksonville Grand National Championship will be three-day events including Friday practice except the Round 4 at Barnesville, which will be a Saturday-Sunday two-day event with extended practice Saturday morning.
Each event consists of two full days of racing (8 race days total).
Competitors may count their best 6 of 8 races toward Southern Tour championship standings, meaning a competitor could miss one full event and still have a legitimate change at a class championship.
While it’s impossible to not conflict with every sprint karting series, we have done our best to not conflict with clubs and other spring national series.
